Lieutenant William Calley emerged as the most prominent figure in the subsequent court-martial, facing charges for premeditated murder of over a hundred civilians during the Vietnam War and was accountable for war crimes. Calley was found guilty in March 1971 and initially sentenced to life imprisonment, but his punishment was significantly reduced, leading to his release on parole after serving just a fraction of his sentence.
