(55,445 posts)on Ambrose Burnside, since I walked through the park that bore his name every day...
As I remember it, Burnside was primarily concerned with the terribly poor knowledge returning union veterans had about long-term rifle maintenance (RI at the time was still a very heavy farming/hunting community), substandard production tolerances that led to wildly varying weapon accuracy, etc...So he was much more of a "better standards-education-maintenance" type....
Maybe that's more about Burnside's personal mission as president rather than the organization itself, but given how batshit insane the NRA has gotten in the thirty years since going hardcore political, it wouldn't surprise me at all if they whitewashed their history to fit more in line with their current 'mindset'
