15. My favorite "brush with greatness" is that I knew his dog.

He and I were born in the same town, Sylacauga, AL. He went to school with my mother's older sister. I never lived in Sylacauga really but visited my mother's parents, who at one point lived across the street from his mother. He was just beginning his Gomer career so the town was gaga. But I was never there when he was. I did, however, talk to his mom a couple of times (I was really little, like six or seven) as she walked the big poodle that had been his but that she'd kept when he left. My cousins met him a time or two. I wasn't smart enough at the time to envy them, but I've come to admire him and chuckle about my brush with greatness.
