As a background, every Sunday my newspaper interviews various people around the local community to get their take on the week's stories.
On the panel this week was a gentleman by the name of Fred Carlson. Carlson is listed as being an "advocate" for the Central Beach Alliance, and is listed on their website as being on the board of directors. From what I gather, the Central Beach Alliance is a large umbrella association of the various condominium and residential community HOAs along the coast in the Broward County, Florida area.
Anyways, as to the verdict in the Zimmerman trial, Carlson writes:
"The Zimmerman jurors rose above the prejudice of the judge, the drama-seeking media, the prosecutor, the vicious racism of the liberal establishment in Washington and sadly, that of a vocal segment of the black population. "Hold on," you might say, "What about white racism?" Reverse the color of Zimmerman and Martin. To have a black neighborhood watch guy would seem to be playing with fire. Would he be fair to a teenage white guy in a hoodie? Yes, it would be OK if the black watch guy was a regular cop, doing an off-duty detail. Otherwise, I would feel that the black guy might be prone to violence, racial hatred. I kept coming back to the fact that the prison population is predominantly black, and that violence against whites, by blacks, is a fact of life in our cities. The lack of family life, a father at home, seems to me to be a major factor contributing to black youth crime"

Okay, so let me get this straight. You are going to throw away an actual example of a white neighborhood watchman who killed a black teenager where race was arguably a factor in the ultimate event and chalk it up to that person being a victim of the media, "liberal establishment" and "vocal segment of the black population." However, you'll easily throw out a hypothetical situation where a black watchman would just run totally rampant against the community out of his own racial hatred of whites.
Wow. Just wow.
And before someone chalks up Carlson's attitude to him being some vestige of the Old South still living in the land of Jim Crow, some slack jawed closeted KKK sympathizer, check out the Sun-Sentinel's brief bio of Carlson:
"20 years ago Fred Carlson came from New York to Fort Lauderdale. Beach resident and condo president, he is also Liaison to City Government and Director at the Central Beach Alliance, the CBA. A few years ago he was President of this community organization. He also writes "On The Beach with Fred Carlson" for CityView Fort Lauderdale magazine. In a previous life on Wall Street he was a commodity analyst for Merrill Lynch and then ran their Sugar Trading Desk which catered to the World Sugar Trade and hedgers. Education: Kimball Union Academy. Hobart and William Smith College. University of Pa. Wharton School. "
Judging on his picture, he probably spent 50-60 years of his life living in supposedly "liberal" New York, he's Ivy league educated and a product of Wall Street. More proof that racist attitudes come from every part of this nation and every class, not just certain segments.
In case one wants to give the Central Beach Alliance a piece of their mind for this wonderful specimen of humanity they have on their board of directors, their email is Treasurer@cbaftl.com.
