I always read the labels on the fresh produce I buy. I usually don't buy out of season, which means I don't buy asparagus from Mexico in freaking November (I saw this in the supermarket yesterday).

All the produce at our Whole Foods is clearly marked as to origin (as I believe is the case for all produce sold now in the US). So if you keep to fresh, you won't be getting Chinese vegetables.

I do buy frozen veggies from Trader Joe's to keep around. Frozen vegetables are actually supposed to as nutritious, and sometimes more nutritious, than fresh. At any rate, I just checked the three bags I had in the freezer: the petite green peas say "product of USA"; the "Vegetable Medley" is "product of Belgium"; but the stir-fry vegetables I keep on hand for making a quick dinner sometimes just say they are packed in California. Hmmmm, maybe they're from China. Well, at least they're Chinese vegetables.
