Needless to say, this "science" was based entirely on nonsense and existed solely for propaganda purposes.

Modern-day Conservatives are engaged in some similar shenanigans, in which they redefine "science" to say what they want it to say. "Scientists" for the tobacco industry tell us smoking is harmless, "scientists" for the oil industry tell us that leaded gas is harmless and that global warming is fiction.
