He's been under investigation for 1.5 years. It is therefore likely that when he was hired, he was not playing nice with Daesh. So, whomever hired him had- I'm sure- no idea. If Kent State is anything like my university, which is a giant state university, Pino underwent a background check just like the rest of us professors.
People do become radicalized in relatively short order, you know. I guess I'd better be quiet, however, lest all Latin Americanists become suspect.
