I was fresh out of high school and wrote a letter to Western New Mexico University in Silver City, saying that I was interested in becoming a forest ranger and asking for information on related classes there. In the reply I received from the University, I was told that the University offered many such classes, but that because I was a female, I should forget about becoming a forest ranger and instead marry one (YES, I was actually told that!) or else become a secretary at a ranger station.

That wasn’t the only time in my life I was told in so many words to know my place and understand and accept that it was a man’s world. The 50s were absolutely awful for women, and even the 70s, like the 60s, weren’t all that great.

The idea of a woman POTUS would have been considered absurd in those olden days. So, yeah, I’m with Tweety. We women have come a long way.
