And yet Byrd was a long-time powerful Democratic Party leader for years after his KKK membership should have been an embarrassment.

He changed.

We're desperate enough to think that something the candidate's wife did 20 years ago says something important about what he now believes, or to hold him responsible for what he did in 2nd grade, when he was 7 or 8 (I assume).

Hell, I don't like being held responsible for what I did in college (which in my case--being the underachiever that I am--happened long after I was 7 or 8).
