In their so called mind: "I am a piece of shit, but at least I am better than ..."
Fill in the blanks there. It changes with time. Catholics, Jews, Blacks (seems pretty constant), Hispanics, Gays, Bisexuals. Long time ago it was Germans, Irish, Poles, the list goes on ad-nauseam. Women, Poor, Rich, AHH it goes on forever!
