I think he only pretended to be dragged kicking and screaming into the Speaker's job. One thing is undoubtedly taking up about as much of his waking day as it did the mythical Frank Underwood: slime his way into the presidency. He's next in line if Trump and Pence both go. Trump has a lot of baggage, but you can be sure that Pence is at least as aware of that as Ryan, and will have started playing CYA as soon as it was clear that the election would be handed to them.

It should be a real battle of the slimeballs if Trump goes. Pence wanting to get his chance to set the national agenda, whereas this time last year, he was looking at fading into the woodwork. Ryan, on the other hand, got humiliated as Willard's VP, but got a close enough look to learn to want it--not the VP spot, but the top spot. Could be some serious mud wrestling in the near future...
