One year in San Diego I woke up from a Sunday afternoon nap and thought it was dawn and I had somehow slept through the entire night and had better get dressed for work. Then it slowly dawned on me that it was still Sunday and the sky was a deep orange due to a giant, fast moving wildfire. Ashes were falling and they were like potatoes chips. That was in 2003 and schools were closed for a week, that never had happened before but it happened again only 4 years later in 2007. 1,500 home were lost and many friends, students and other teachers lost their homes.
