This was a two-fold operation- spread false rumor of Russian hacking into Hillary's private server to make it seem that she had compromised national security- hurting her popularity, while at same time being able to lure the Trump gang into thinking Russians really had her emails in order to get Trumpsters to promise concessions to Russia in return for her emails and Russian help in campaign
