Every state has its own challenges and quirks. I'm glad that I've lived in several different states as an adult, which helps me understand somewhat better the places I've never lived in.
I'm in New Mexico, and while it is of course quite a bit smaller than you -- although it's the fifth largest by size -- but we do have a pretty large indigenous population, and I'm aware of some of the issues connected to schools on tribal lands, very similar to what you're describing.
