(13,340 posts)37. Except that he was brave enough to raise taxes a lot.
Lots of folks here forgetting that he raised taxes by quite a bit, despite calls from the GOP that it would cause a depression. He also passed an Assault Weapons Ban. I don;t think it did any good, but it was a an effort, and those two things ushered in Gingrich and his "revolution." Why do so many casually forget those facts?
Was he the perfect progressive? No. But he was hardly a "Republican." The country did far better under him than any of the GOP, and he was building a base on which to expand. Sadly, he couldn't keep it in his pants, and the GOP managed to spin that into more than they should have been able too.
