In reply to the discussion: “Game-Changing” Study Links Cellphone Radiation to Cancer [View all]William Seger
(11,196 posts)Call that "denial" of the "suggestion" if you will, but if this study holds up, then it indicates an entirely new category of cancer causes. Cancer is caused by DNA damage, and the only known causes are chemical carcinogens, certain viruses, and ionizing radiation -- i.e. electromagnetic photons that are energetic enough to knock electrons out of molecules, which are high-frequency ultraviolet light, x-rays, and gamma rays. But ultraviolet photons that have that much energy are almost a million times more energetic than the photons used by cellphone frequencies, and the effect is not cumulative: Either an individual photon has enough kinetic energy to knock an individual electron out of an atom, or it doesn't. If not, then whatever energy it has is simply absorbed as heat, and absorbing more of them just means more heat, not ionization.
If this study holds up, then current science has no explanation, but if it holds up, then I feel confident that the scientific method can handle it. Until then, I'll continue to "deny suggestions" that haven't been through that process.
