During WWII, submarine actions were notably off the table for journalists, hence "The silent service". Subs work best by stealth and secrecy. They hide!
Ask Richard O'Kane about his missions in the SS Tang, the most successful WWII US sub. Sadly, he's now dead, but his memoirs of his voyages in both the SS Wahoo under the notable Captain "Mushmouth" Morton, and as skipper of the SS Tang, are legendary in submarine history.
O'Kane's first rule was: We announce our presence first by our torpedoes. Surprise was his first and prominent strategy. Being undetected was primary to a successful patrol.
