US invitation of Taiwan to democracy summit angers China

6. October 1, 1949 is when the PRC was established

December 7, 1949 is when the ROC government (KMT-ruled) officially fled to Taiwan. China in some form (Ming Dynasty, Qing Dynasty, Early ROC) did officially rule over Taiwan, but it was a pretty loose arrangement.

Though, I agree that Taiwan should be recognized as an independent state. It's been too long since the mainlanders fled to Taiwan.

When I lived in Taiwan, there was a representative for each of the mainland provinces in the Taiwanese Legislative Yuan. That was a little nuts.
