Australian Open organizers said fans will be allowed to wear t-shirts of former Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai after receiving international backlash for removing a fan wearing the t-shirt.
Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley told The Associated Press Tuesday that it is okay for fans to wear Pengs shirts at the event as long they dont gather in groups or create a disturbance for fans.
If they want to do that, thats fine, Tiley told the newswire. (But) if anyones coming on site with the express intent of disrupting the comfort and safety of our fans, theyre not welcome.
We cant sell tickets in advance and have people come in and feel unsafe because theres a large group of people that are using (the tournament) as a platform to espouse their views on whatever topic it is, Tiley added.
