Fact Check- U.S. government officials did not say crack pipes would be distributed in safer drug kits

Confusion circulated on social media in February 2022 as to whether the Biden Administration would distribute crack pipes as part of safer drug kits. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the White House Press Secretary, Jen Psaki, both said they never mentioned that pipes would be included.

An article ( archive.is/iVqPa ) published by The Washington Free Beacon appears to be the catalyst for the claims ( here ), ( here ), that HHS was providing $30 million in grant funding (which would include for pipes) to non-profits and local governments to help make drug use safer for people with drug addictions.

On Feb. 7, Washington Free Beacon reported ( archive.is/iVqPa ) that a spokesman for HHS said the kits “will provide pipes for users to smoke crack cocaine, crystal methamphetamine, and “any illicit substance”.

The Biden Administration, however, publicly refuted the claim. During the Feb. 9 White House Press Briefing ( here ), Psaki responded to a journalist’s question (see 10:47 mark) about the existence of crack pipes inside “safe smoking kits” funded by the administration, saying, “they were never a part of the kit, it was inaccurate reporting”.
