Though it seemed rather gradual, it actually happened quite quickly. I remember when Walmart pushed manufacturers to move their companies overseas, especially to China, so they could offer cheaper prices. They either complied or went out of business. Then their competitors followed suit.

There is plenty of blame to go around and the American consumer's appetite for cheaper and cheaper goods didn't help. No more "Look for the Union Label", most labels say, "Made in China". Now we live in a country where many people can't afford housing and healthcare, but "stuff" is really cheap. It can't possibly be sustainable.
