The basic problem is that a lot of people simply do not understand or respect copyright.

You don't need to register a copyright to own it. Copyright is implicit by creation. With AI, the question is who created it, and the short answer is that whoever made up the code that generated the AI to begin with should own those rights. AI creators are looking at the end product, but that's not how copyright works.

This is a huge problem with music sampling too, people sticking other peoples' work into theirs, without acknowledgement or more importantly, compensation.
