In Brazil, notably, the maternal death rate rose from 58 in 2019, to 72 in 2020, and to 112 in 2021 - the highest since 1990.

In neighboring Argentina, it was even more dramatic: from 37 in 2019, to 41 in 2020, to 74 in 2021 - the highest since 1979.

Similar - though milder - bumps in maternal mortality were seen during the 2009 'swine flu' epidemic.
