WAUSAU The Wisconsin Department of Justices Division of Criminal Investigation will be serving as lead investigator on the Sept. 22 removal of the absentee ballot drop box by Wausau Mayor Doug Diny.
The state-level investigation was confirmed Thursday morning via email by the Wisconsin Office of the Attorney General. The drop box was returned to its regular location on Monday.
The investigation comes after City Clerk Kaitlyn Bernarde made two reports of an election irregularity on Sept. 23 and Sept. 27. The Portage County Sheriffs Department was deployed for the initial investigation, according to a Friday news release from Marathon County District Attorney Theresa Wetzsteon.
On Wednesday, a group of four Wausau residents delivered a formal request to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Wisconsin, according to a release from the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign. Marathon County Supervisor Randy Radtke, who represents District 10, was one of the residents named in the request.
