The agency actually regulates almost 25% of the national GDP, which includes foods (predominately "processed" food, with some overlap with USDA and U.S. Fish and Wildlife (like "veal on the hoof", rabbits, and turtles, and seafood/shellfish), and "food supplements" such as "vitamins/minerals" and homeopathic products), drugs (prescription and OTC), medical devices (and appliances like microwave ovens), biologics (including vaccines), cosmetics (and any "externally applied" product like lotions, etc), veterinary products (foods, drugs, and biologics), tobacco (recently and overlapping with ATF), and certain alcohol products (overlapping with ATF including anything "low alcohol" less than ~5% - 7% by volume, e.g., some wines, beers, hard cider, etc).

It has been seriously underfunded and understaffed for decades.
