John Dean says conservatives with power almost always end up abusing it. As a young man, Dean was a Goldwater conservative, with what seems like moderate libertarian leanings. But while observing over 40 years, including in the Nixon administration, he went from believing conservatives would govern better to sadly accepting that as a group they always fail to govern well and honorably.

My words, don't remember his, but Dean said conservative who've taken control don't govern, they try to "rule" and also inevitably embrace cronyism with the spoils of winning elections. Both of which, of course, are 100% inappropriate to a republic. And both of which we are seeing now.

Btw, dysfunctional as Rump is, he knows this at some level. He's said himself that the economy does better under Democratic administrations.
