but have seemed perfectly willing to use wedge issues that don't reflect their personal beliefs to achieve power and influence.

I don't think they are personally racist, they seem to value education, and I don't believe that they are personally opposed to abortion. The older Bush even resigned from the NRA because of their heavy-handed mail campaigns. Yet, they are perfectly willing to subvert their rather moderate, old-time Republican values to use things like gay marriage, gun control, and abortion as wedge issues, they were willing to stoop to using the likes of Lee Atwater and Rove to run their campaigns, and they clearly had no scruples about disenfranchising voters in Florida to win.
