I didn't realize how controversial this position has been historically and still is.

Turns out, both the Chinese Room experiment and the Thai Library experiment were a necessary response to the widely unquestioned proposition presented in the Turing test for gauging the threshold at which artificial intelligence can be considered on par with human intelligence. They both expose flaws in Turing's proposition. In the context of this larger debate, the Thai Library experiment is justified in its contrivance and is certainly nor moot.
