If you remember, when the Obamas initially considered getting a dog, I think getting one from rescue was the plan. But then they had to consider the daughter's allergies and the dog from Ted Kennedy fit the bill. At least they're aware of rescue (which some people aren't), and are donating to the HSUS in this new pup's name. 
BTW, I adopt senior dogs from rescue, so I really do understand the frustration.
