(37,726 posts)And the GOP is exactly right about this being "political," IMHO.
Set the way-back machine back to pre 2004 election campaign time. Karl Rove's "War President" needed a political victory in the cluster-fuck that Iraq had turned into. No WMDs, no end to the fighting, Saddam and Bin Laden still loose, so in order to find Saddam and score a political victory in time for the 2004 political campaign for president, Rove Cheney and the neocon hordes decided to turn up the heat in places like Abu Ghraib and Gitmo. Up popped the old Gestapo justification for their "Verschärfte Vernehmung" Bush's pet lawyers like Yoo and Gonzales and Addington, based on old Nazi "legal" reasoning made torture "LEGAL" and the CIA went medieval/GESTAPO on applying the Gestapo techniques right down to the use of attack dogs on unarmed restrained POWs.
It really was "POLITICAL," like the GOP is saying...I can see no other reason for their "justification" of these crimes. The motive was there. The stage was set and General Miller, who had set up the torture program at GITMO, was transferred to Iraq to show the boys how it was to be done.

The statute of limitation, still hasn't run out on those WWII era torturers and murderers. This needs to be addressed and sorted out, before some day, torture becomes the norm in our own country,(if it hasn't already) buy a bunch of maniacs, like the neocon war criminals holding all the political cards again someday.
The GOP is also raising holy hell today, about the ACA being "unread," before it was voted on, but they never said a damned word about the Patriot Act, being passed without being read.
