I was 7-10, long before any radicalization. Luckily my sister got to be "Polack". He did it out of love and probably more than a little bit, seeing himself in Archie. He was politically the same, but from the smallest of towns. Black folk he knew and farmed with were fine, but "The Blacks" was another story. He wasn't a gun nut, just a hardworking man raising his family.

That being said about his bigotry in general, when my lesbian cousin(that was enough craziness) got deeply involved with a woman who had a child with a black man previously, there was never a word said or slur uttered. He may have been bigoted about the big picture(of which he knew very little), but he was always a loving human.

Sadly, in the 70's, Archie was supposed to be the soon-to-be-dead, shambling ghost of the ignorance and hatred that has now roared back and slowly ripping the fabric of our country. It's like Archie truly did win the presidency, just delayed till 2016.
