I can completely sympathize.

For the longest while, we weren't even able to get into the nursing home to see my mother, let alone hold her hand or hug her.

It may not have done much for her--though I'm sure there's an argument to be made that she would have felt it even though she was not conscious--but it would have done me a world of good.
