If you use the speakers on carpet, they are meant to penetrate the pile and the pad to reach the floor. They allow you to adjust the 'level' as well. It's a means to both increase stability, and in some cases, improve your sound quality.

If you use the speakers on a hardwood or tile floor, you can then insert the pads between the tip of the spike and the floor.
