with John McLaughlin in the mid-70s.

It was in a smallish venue in Seattle. After they finished there was dead silence, then suddenly the people in the back of the auditorium jumped up and started cheering. Those of us in the front were too stunned to even move. We started finding ourselves again and began clapping and at last joined the cheering. It was like going into another universe and we had a ways to get back!
