They base rankings on on-the-field performance and Alabama beat the undefeated number one team in a conference championship game. Florida State won their conference, but what were their quality wins? They didn't beat Louisville considerably better than Kentucky did the prior week. Kentucky. The ACC was down this year compared to recent seasons overall. The SEC wasn't down as five teams finished ranked in the CFP top 13, and Bama beat three of them, not playing Missouri.
