(20,176 posts)From what I've been told...there's a right way and a wrong way to do it. The right way requiring a trip to an actual piercing salon where an extremely-sharp hollow-point needle will be used to punch a hole...same as any other piercing. They're going to charge you for their skill, training and expertise...often as much as $35-$50.
The wrong way being the cheap, quick (often free with a purchase) way with a gun and a somewhat-blunt stud typically done by jewelry shops, some salons and Claire's which less makes a hole as tears one. Hurts more, bleeds more, more likely to get infected, less likely to heal right...but it's convenient and cheap and slightly-safer than doing it at home with a sewing needle and an ice cube.
What's the difference otherwise? Pretty much no reputable and licensed piercer at a studio will do it before she's 8-12 depending on the studio's policy with parental consent or 16-18 (depending on local law) without it.
