It was nothing but mesquite bushes and now it looks like a real part of the city with some really nice buildings and businesses.
I am also glad they are getting a real Engineering building. The problem with the CEED building is that they still use it to host meetings and conferences and (at least once during my career there) a wedding. When this happens there is no parking and people start parting in spots not intended parking or having to use the HUGE performance arts parking lot and walking over to the CEED building.
As for the waste site, they been pushing for that for a long time now. I remember back in '98 that they were trying to bring one here and my county was in the final three for getting the facility. In the end, we lost out to Sierra Blanca. What I didn't know was that the company was from Vermont and it turned into a minor primary issue this year.
At the time, I was actually in favor of it, because (supposedly) the nuclear waste level was LOWER than the radiation produced by a pump jack, and this area is littered with those.
