Much as I would like to convince people that I was reading Proust from the age of 5 it was comics such as the Dandy and the Beano which were my first literary experiences. Despite the fact that DC Thomson is in many ways as reactionary an organisation as you can find the comics really were very much in touch with the working and lower middle class world that provided most of their readership. If you find any of the editions from prior to the mid 60s you will catch a glimpse of a world where memories of rationing and food shortages still played out in children's stories and the the best possible ending for a tale was for the characters to enjoy a slap up feed. No doubt our current government will do its best tomorrow to reintroduce modern kids to that reality.
