construction of the Metro got started. I remember people complaining that it was a huge waste, no one would ever take it. Well, 50 plus years later it's absolutely amazing, even given the recent problems with aging stock and deferred maintenance.

Last month I was in Vienna, VA for two weeks at a hotel 2 blocks from the Spring Hill station, and twice went to the Mall on the Metro for sightseeing. Wonderful. Doubt if I'd live there again, but if I were, I'd absolutely find a place to live within two or three blocks of a Metro station.
