not just the use of pronouns but also the fact that it's a story at all; Jenner has not come out as transgender, so the whole thing has a feeling of outing. LGBT people own their own stories and it's for them to come out when they're comfortable doing so. This kind of salacious public outing can be pretty harmful and really the public doesn't have any right to know. I can see making an exception to the rule for outing a closeted public figure who's actively engaged in harming the LGBT community; if someone is closeted and is an elected official engaged in denying marriage equality or promoting harmful things like "conversion therapy"? Then sure, they're fair game. Otherwise outing someone who hasn't come out themselves is really unethical. (Even if "family members say X has come out to them as gay/lesbian/transgender", it's still not the person themselves saying it.)
