It's so hard. I cry for you cause I've found myself in that same spot, concerning your hubby being unable to let go.
We recently lost our dear kitty who was especially close to my man. Even tho we've now gotten another sweet fur baby, at the urging of him (she's black, looks almost exactly like our old girl who passed), he is still so heartbroken that I'm starting to worry for him. Regardless that all of the worst part of her death fell on me, to care, and I, alone, am still haunted by those final moments, the sadness that's now pervading our household, the dark cloud that hovers right atop his head when he walks in our door and she's no longer there to greet him, is making our loss incredibly hard for my family, including our new little companion.

You were strong for your Mia and did the right thing, humanely. I'll always believe that is a part of the meaning of unconditional love, recognizing the look in another's eyes that says, "it's time". And having the grace to give them that.
