One of my cats decided not to come in when called last night, stayed out in the rain until I finally got out of bed to check on her. I can't say she sheepishly came in. I think she boldly came in, soaking wet. I found her this morning all cozy and warm in one of the cat baskets scattered around the house (we have three cats).

As for "gifts," I'm not sure if it's the cats or dogs who leave dead mice as tribute. But over the years I have become the rodent disposer (mice, skunks, possums, etc.). In my next life, that job is a deal-breaker.
