(14,563 posts)I am a PAer, I get him completely.
He is a smart guy, a very hard and capable campaigner, and he is exceptionally strong in all three core republican areas 1) Unabashed in pushing religion into government 2) One of the biggest of all war hawks 3) Ran K Street from the senate side when he was still there, so he is in with the big business types.
He has a JD and is generally well versed on most major issues. He is NOT a bachmann or cain type moron.
However, he GENUINELY believes the most far right of all positions and is open about it.
Whatever the end result of GWB's presidency was, he at least got there under the veil of being a moderate - "compassionate conservative." Bush's one true gift was a politician, being able to speak in moderate manner while being able to wink at the far right and them know for sure he was their guy.
Santorum absolutely would tighten up the party, and would get the grass roots people motivated, there is no doubt about that. But, he would not be able to have the same appeal the mushy middle that Romney probably would have. And, as much as he would energize HIS team, he would inversely energize the democratic net roots, he is THAT kind of guy, that would really put a charge into both sides.
His presence would juice up the Ds almost as much as it would juice up the Rs, and the difference would be less of an appeal to the indy vote.
