(14,629 posts)My first vote was for McGovern in 72. Spent the day back in my home district (college students couldn't vote where they went to school) driving people to the polls for the Democratic Party.
Got home around 8 PM after a 14 day to find out the damn race had already been called for Nixon.
And to make things worse, my liberal but somewhat apolitical roommates were getting dressed to go to Republican headquarters. When I asked WTF for, they said "free food and liquor and a lot of drunk girls celebrating the win."
I stayed home and pondered the demise of our great nation. And, looking back, I think the Trump/Cruz/modern GOP was born during those 8 years that Nixon was in office and we are still paying for it.
I know the two sides get heated here, but either of our candidates are a huge step away from the brink that is represented by the GOPers.
I won't see you at the polls in November, but we will be there together as brothers in spirit
