I read that "liberal" to "conservative" - and whatever other personalities are out there - personality orientation correlates more strongly with spouse choice than any other factor, including education and other important social and economic issues. This stuff goes far deeper than just politics, and people gravitate to those who share their feelings about the world, our place in it, morality, etc.
We have some hard-core conservatives in our extended family, and we can be their friends knowing that about them. They're very decent when focused on their own, only shocking when attention turns to what should be done with "outsiders", so we don't talk about that.
Unfortunately, they cannot accept us in turn if we say what we think, so we let them talk and that's it. Last time I saw one I commented on how well Trump was doing, knowing that would please him. He no doubt intuits that I probably don't actually support Trump myself, but we never will discuss why. A delicate line, but it works.
