In reply to the discussion: Honestly, how likely is it just anybody can loiter in the papal residence and "ambush" the pope? [View all]fried eggs
(910 posts)17. Here's how it happened:
On the Vermont senator, Francis said he greeted Sanders on Saturday morning as he was leaving the Santa Marta, the hotel within Vatican grounds where the pope lives.
Sanders was staying at the same residence, because thats where all participants in the Vatican conference he attended on Friday were spending the night. The only exceptions were Presidents Evo Morales of Bolivia and Rafael Correa of Ecuador, who stayed at their countrys embassy in Rome.
This morning as I was leaving, Senator Sanders was there, Francis said. He knew I was coming out at that time, and he had the kindness to greet me.
When I came down, he introduced himself, I greeted him with a handshake, and nothing more, the pope added. Its common courtesy, this is called common courtesy.
If someone thinks that greeting someone is getting involved in politics, he said, I recommend that they find a psychiatrist.

This morning, Bernie Sanders told reporters that he had a meeting with the pope, which forced the pope to respond with the facts when he was asked about it. Bernie made it political. He loitered and waited for the pope to exit the hotel they were both in, and introduced himself. Then he ran and told US Media that he had a meeting with the pope. He's a liar.

The pope, as one of the most protected humans on the planet, would not have to meet Bernie

how likely is it that the Pope seeks a meeting with someone and then does not share a single word

My understanding is Sanders went to participate in the conference and was hoping to meet the pope

There is no way the pope's handlers would allow him to be put in an unavoidable situtation

"when I came down he introduced himself"... sounds like the popes handlers didn't know Sanders

Everyone, including those of us here in America, knew the pope had an early flight to Greece

The popes schedule was known... there was no "meeting" Sanders misrepresented the encounter
