(804 posts)I grew up in Orange Country, California during the Reagan years: a more conservative California land you'd be hard pressed to find.
One fall, the union I worked under took a vote and decided to strike. The vote included the more liberal Los Angeles stores as well, so we went on strike.
Out of the 150 or so workers from our store, 2 of us were on the picket line. The rest went with the Reagan frame of mind, crossed the picket lines and continued to work.
I spent the entire Fall and Winter (Thxgiving /Xmas) outside with a picket sign. The union had to hire others to picket for us when we went on break.
The store was very popular, and I recall standing (and eventually sitting on the brick wall) with my sign on weekend afternoons watching hordes of people walking by without a blinkdozens and dozens and dozens, passing by like flood waters. Occasionally a young person would walk up, ask for a flyer, nod and walk away. Otherwise, we looked like a complete joke. Young men would drive by in their shiny new pickup trucks and yell things like "GET A JOB!" and speed off.
Thanks to L.A. we won the strike...but I guess I didn't feel like it: after going back into the store afterward, it was so uncomfortable that I quit a few weeks later.
Anyways, I can imagine how tough it must be to live in a STATE that is something like that. Hang in there, I wish you the best!!
And Thanks for your hard work: we're all in this together. And, I'm sure you love your state and that's awesome!
Go Obama!!!
