3. I think it is smart to use legal tax deductions and credits, where you can.

It would be silly of me, for instance, to not use the student loan interest deduction, which I am allowed to claim.

However, it would be tax evasion to claim something that I wasn't due, or to seek to trick the system, just so I don't have to pay taxes. That's not smart, it's greedy, I agree 100%.
