4. No matter who they ran, the odds against that are YUGE

The GOP best hope is that "Donald J Trump" wins and the party can convince the electors to vote for their guy. But that won't happen.

Their best solution (and as you point out rational isn't a strong GOP suit) is to pretend they have no Presidential candidate and focus entirely on down-ticket races. Either way, GOP voter interest and turnout drops.
