6. He did support single payer in Vermont....

...but the Governor, who also supported it (and almost got it implented) could not get the numbers to work out acceptably. Sanders can't change arithmetic. It will need action on the federal level.

A bigger state might have had more success. Anything like this becomes more feasible as the number of participants increases. Otherwise, as they discovered, the costs-per-person become too high to be acceptable.
